Champions League: Wednesday Night Action

Wrapping Up The Round Of 16

Although there are just two Champions League encounters to deal with this evening, here’s our preview of those European heavyweight clashes.

Task Already Complete

With a 5-0 first leg victory already in his back pocket, Pep Guardiola has been afforded something of a luxury before tonight’s visit of Sporting and with qualification all but assured, it would need a herculean effort from the Portuguese outfit to advance themselves.

Although odds of a 6-0 away win are currently at 350/1 with BetVictor, it is probably worth keeping the one in your pocket and even if Manchester City do ring the changes this evening, their might should be more than enough to pick up success in the second leg as well.

While it is the potential period of rest and recuperation which could also do City wonders in the Premier League and without the need to play the big guns this evening, they will be nicely refreshed for the trip to Crystal Palace on Monday.

Which makes tonight’s clash in Manchester the deadest of Champions League dead rubbers and even the most ardent City fan could be excused for watching Real Madrid vs PSG on the other channel.

However, even if Sporting’s Road to Paris ends here, there is still the ability to make some money from the bookmakers and with the current Premier League leaders priced at 5/6 to win with bet365 and to win to nil at the same time, that seems a rather shrewd bet regardless of the starting eleven.

The Mbappe Spotlight

If Real Madrid wanted to sign Kylian Mbappe before their Round of 16 first leg clash with PSG, they will have really wanted to sign him by the final whistle and with French forward being the difference in Paris, he will now aim to be the same in the Spanish capital.

Going into tonight’s second leg, it is PSG who have a one-goal advantage and if they can keep a clean sheet at the Santiago Bernabeu, their passage to the last eight of the competition will have been safely secured.

Then again, such a feat is perhaps easier said than done and when you consider the wealth of talent that Carlo Ancelotti can call upon as Real Madrid manager, he will certainly hope his attackers can test the visiting defence.

With no away goal giving PSG an extra lift, it also means a 1-0 win for Real Madrid in 90 minutes will take the game to extra time and with 30 additional minutes in front of their own supporters, that may just tip the balance in the host’s favour.

Of course, it is not just the narrative of Kylian Mbappe being courted by Los Blancos which is so interesting, it also the small matter of Lionel Messi and Neymar returning to the stage where many previous skirmishes have taken place.

Because although their colours may be different these days, the desire to beat Real will still be the same and this is another reason why tonight’s clash of the football titans, is set to be so captivating.

Not only that, but it is captivating in terms of finding the top tips and although there is a litany of world class talent, I have a feeling this could be cagier than first thought. Therefore, I am going to plump for under 2.5 total goals at odds of 6/4 with bet365.
