Victor Chandler has drifted Chelsea out to 7/4 to win the Premier League title after the defending champions put in an unimpressive showing in the Community Shield yesterday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men went down to a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United at Wembley, with goals from Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov giving United victory and casting doubts over Chelsea’s title credentials this season.
Yesterday’s performance, combined with a relatively quiet pre-season in the transfer market by Stamford Bridge standards, prompted a number of bookmakers to push the odds out Chelsea from 13/8 to 7/4, although the Blues remain favourites for the Premier League title.
Victor Chandler has also cut Manchester United from 11/4 to 5/2 to win the title, although United can be had at a best price of 13/5 with bwin.
Betfred, bet365 and SkyBet have all made similar moves, suggesting that Chelsea may not have things all their own way this season.
bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth said: "Chelsea only really got going late on when they were chasing the game and we’re now of the opinion that there isn’t such a gulf between the two sides."
History is also on the side of United, who have gone on to win the Premier League on the last two occasions that they have won the Community Shield, in 2008 and 2009.
