Chelsea team news

Here is the latest Chelsea team news before their meeting with Sheffield United.

Reece James was forced off with a hamstring issue 27 minutes into the loss to Everton at the weekend.

James is now a major doubt for the festive period ahead of scans on his leg: “Reece felt something in his hamstring,” Mauricio Pochettino said.

“For sure he’s injured, but we don’t know how serious it is. Of course for us he is an important player, one of the best full-backs in the world. “We go back and assess again in the next few days what is going on with his hamstring.”

Elsewhere, Pochettino has hinted that Christopher Nkunku is closing in on his long-awaited comeback from a knee injury suffered in pre-season: “The last step is always the most difficult thing,” the manager said last week, adding that he hopes to have Nkunku ready ‘soon’.

Finally, Robert Sanchez was taken off vs Everton due to a recurrence of a previous knee injury. Sanchez’s potential return date is currently unknown.

“Robert Sanchez suffered a problem at Manchester United, it was an issue with his knee,” said Pochettino. “He felt something during the second half, that is why he asked for the change. We must hope it is not a big issue.”
