The Chinese Grand Prix returns to the Formula 1 roster in 2024. The race, staged at its traditional Shanghai International Circuit home, will be the fifth contest on a calendar that features 24 races. Lewis Hamilton won the race when it was last staged in 2019. The British driver also claimed the contest in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2017.

Celebrating the contest’s return to the Formula 1 fold, the sport has designated the Chinese Grand Prix race weekend as the venue for the first F1 Sprint event of the season. The Formula 1 Sprint calendar is designed to feature circuits that encourage overtaking and make for close and entertaining racing.

2024 F1 Sprint Events

  • 19-21 April - Shanghai, China
  • 3-5 May - Miami, USA
  • 28-30 June - Spielberg, Austria
  • 18-20 October - Austin, USA
  • 1-3 November - Sao Paulo, Brazil
  • 29 Nov - 1 Dec - Lusail, Qatar

Formula 1 announced the six venues that will host F1 Sprint events during the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship season last week. The other five venues are Brazil – set to host an F1 Sprint for a fourth time – Austria, Austin, Qatar, and Miami.

The inclusion of Miami has raised a few eyebrows, as two editions of the race have provided nothing other than a tragically dull contest. Additionally, two of the season’s final four races will come equipped with a Sprint. There is no Sprint weekend schedule for almost four months between the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June and the USA Grand Prix in October.

Contracts Expire

Unlike the 2024 Formula 1 calendar – the longest ever – and new venues for F1 Sprints, there are no changes to the driver line-up that entertained fans in 2023. It is the first time in the sport’s history that a driver has not left or joined the sport.

Fifteen drivers will see their current contracts end in 2024, so it is unlikely that things will remain unchanged in 2025. Sergio Perez, who, on a performance basis, has been embarrassed by teammate Max Verstappen, is the highest profile driver (from the highest profile team) who could be shown the door or demoted to a lesser team.

Have a Punt on Ocon

From a punting viewpoint, the Alpine drivers are the most fascinating duo. Pierre Gasly – a Red Bull castoff – joined Alpine at the start of 2023 and was considered 9/4 to outscore his established teammate, Esteban Ocon.

He duly caused the upset, finishing the season with 62 points compared to Ocon’s 58. On that form, bookmakers will surely make Gasly a marginal favourite to finish ahead of his teammate once again in 2024.

But be warned, a close inspection shows Ocon had some terrible luck during the year and will be a good bet if offered at 4/6 or greater once the F1 betting markets open at the start of the season. The reasoning is simple: Ocon, for various reasons, suffered six retirements in 2023. That is three more than any other driver and five more than Pierre Gasly.

Recommended Bet: Ocon to beat Gasly in a match bet at 4/6 or greater

The Show is Back on the Road in February

Pre-season testing for the 2024 season begins on February 21st in Bahrain. There will be three days of testing for the teams ahead of the first Grand Prix at the same venue the following week.
