Newcastle had scored 22 and conceded four at home this season before Tuesday, while Forest were 18th in the away form table.

But Chris Wood’s huge hat-trick handed Forest a massive win in their fight for survival and pilled pressure on a struggling Newcastle.

Chris Wood also became the seventh player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League on Boxing Day, after Thierry Henry (2000), Kevin Phillips (2000), Robbie Fowler (2001), Dimitar Berbatov (2011), Gareth Bale (2012) and Harry Kane (2017).

Furthermore, Wood is the fourth player to score a Premier League hat-trick against a side he has previously played for in the competition: Andy Cole v Newcastle Aug 1999, Marcus Bent v Blackburn Dec 2007, Josh King v Everton Oct 2021.
