With Philippe Coutinho arriving on loan at Aston Villa, it has meant that Steven Gerrard is reunited with one of his former Liverpool teammates and although the dynamic is different in the West Midlands, it looks an exciting partnership all the same.
While that partnership could potentially swell to a trio by the start of next season and with reports that the ex-Rangers boss is also monitoring the movements of Luis Suarez, the class of 2014 could be getting back together.
With Suarez still contracted to Atletico Madrid until the end of the season, a move within this January window will come around too soon and with last year’s LaLiga champions offering a meek defence of their title, a top-four finish this time is of no guarantee.
However, by the time the latest edition of LaLiga comes to an end, Suarez will be a free agent and perhaps more importantly, he is now able to discuss any moves for the 2022/23 campaign.
With the ability to sign a pre-contract afforded to the Uruguayan hitman, Aston Villa will look to move to the front of the queue and with Steven Gerrard being able to call upon a previous Liverpool link, a move is certainly not out of the question.
That is if the former Barcelona forward fancies a return to the Premier League and with a move to the MLS being one that is often mooted, Suarez may fancy the opportunity to cash in instead.
Then again, the lure of the Premier League is mighty strong and when added to the connection that both the Aston Villa manager and the man in question in have, then a stateside move may well be on the backburner.
In terms of this weekend, Aston Villa will look to build on their 2-2 draw with Manchester United and if they are to do so, they will need to avoid the new manager bounce from Everton’s Duncan Ferguson.
While as for Atletico Madrid, it is a return to LaLiga action after a stint in Saudi Arabia and for them, it is a visit of Valencia which will keep them busy this weekend.
