James Doyle has landed the plum Darley July Cup ride on Brazen Beau for a week on Saturday – after being booked to be paired with the Australian challenger by trainer Chris Waller following a piece of work at Newmarket.
Retained by owners Godolphin, Doyle partnered the colt for the first time in a four furlong exercise on the July course on Tuesday morning and will be seated on the Diamond Jubilee runner-up for the 3.45 Newmarket race on Saturday 11 July.
888sport are currently best priced 4/1 Brazen Beau to win the July Cup in the ante-post markets, with new customers able to treble those odds to a fantastic 12/1 for the three-year-old to triumph.
Doyle will replace Craig Williams – who was partnered with Brazen Beau for his second place showing in the Group 1 race at Royal Ascot earlier this month – and is already looking forward to the big race.
Doyle said: “We didn’t do anything spectacular, but he quickened up nicely from the two and hit the line nicely. He’s a ride to look forward to, big time.
“He’s very relaxed for a sprinter, not a buzzy type and I wouldn’t swap him for anything else in the race. Obviously you’ve got to respect the Charlie Hills horse – as he spanked me in the Commonwealth Cup.”
Hills’ Muhaarar is the only horse ahead of Brazen Beau in the July Cup markets, with 888sport offering 10/3 for the three-year-old to win the July Cup. The Dermot Weld-trained Mustajeeb is next up in the ante-post race betting, available at best price 12/1 at 888sport to claim victory at Newmarket.
