Bookmakers have lengthened the odds on England winning World Cup Group C after Fabio Capello’s side could only manage a draw with the USA last night in Rustenberg .
A monumental error from rookie keeper Robert Green allowed USA to take a point in the Group C opening match in a game in which England had plenty of chances to have won easily .
Despite a goal inside four minutes from captain Steven Gerrard , England failed to capitalise on this advantage and squandered possesion too often .
Manager Fabio Capello was also under pressure after James Millner and Ledley King were both seemingly withdrawn due to injuries and striker Emile Heskey was guilty of missing England’s best chance of the second half .
Whilst England probably did enough to win the game they looked along way short of top class and further questions will now be asked about selection and formation after Wayne Rooney was forced to play very deep to pick up the ball and barely had a shot all evening .
Bookmakers reaction is to leave England strong favourites to win Group C at 1/2 with Paddy Power (from 1/3) .
Wayne Rooney remains 13/8 favourite to be England top scorer at the World cup with William Hill with goalscorer Gerrard available at 10/3 with Boylesports .
Meanwhile whilst talk of winning the 2010 World Cup seems rather optimistic , bookmakers are unwilling to take on further liabilities and the 8/1 available yesterday cannot be bettered today and Paddy Power are one of only a handful of firms offering that price .
