England Relegated in Nations League Ahead of World Cup

As far as World Cup preparations go, it has been a far from ideal period for England. They’ve been relegated from the top tier of the Nations League, suffered defeat in Italy, and a little further back, at home to Hungary, and then for most of the game, looked very poor at home to Germany on Monday night.

That was their final chance to play as a team before the World Cup in Qatar, and they didn’t really do much with it.

Yes, there was a fight back. England went from 2-0 down to 3-2 ahead, but then conceded in the closing stages to end up drawing the game 3-3. The fightback, scoring three times in 12 minutes, was excellent, but what came before was far from ideal.

Now, Gareth Southgate must name his England squad for the World Cup on the back of this disappointment. Given the schedule we have coming up, there is pretty much no time for Southgate to work with his players, and get their belief back, before they start to play in Qatar.

England to win the World Cup - 7/1

Can Gareth Southgate bring his players back to their best?

World Cup 2022

It is very likely we will see a ‘work in progress’ England team, when they do take the field for their World Cup opener against Iran, and that is not ideal. This was a team supposedly building on their narrow Euro 2020 defeat, one that would have learnt and arrive in Qatar as the finished article, expected to go a long way.

The past few months have given fans more questions than answers, and given the amount of people showing displeasure at Southgate’s recent effort with the team, anything other than the semi finals as a bare minimum, is likely to see further calls for him to be relieved of his duties as manager.

We are less than two months away from the World Cup, and worries are probably at their highest now than at any other time after the Euro 2020 final, given what has happened recently. England need a bounce back, but have no games to show us one, until they play Iran in their group opener.

Assuming Gareth Southgate remains in charge, which is highly likely, he will announce his World Cup squad in six weeks, players that will control whether he remains England boss or not, after the tournament.
