European Athletics Championships 2010: Dwain Chambers is Favourite for 100m Gold
Bookmakers are offering free bets to new customers on a range of events in the 2010 European Athletics Championship.
The contest for the fastest man in Europe gets underway with round one of the mens100m event in Barcelona tonight.
All eyes will be on the GBR’s Dwain Chambers and France’s Christophe Lemaitre in the first round heats with hopes they will avoid injury or mishap in the expectation of a thrilling head to head in Wednesday’s final.
The two sub 10 sec sprinters dominate the betting and 32-year-old Chambers is favourite to win gold with odds of evens being offered by internet bookmaker Bodog.
Chambers is the first man to run 100m in under 10 seconds in three decades and comes to Barcelona with a season’s best time of 9.99 secs.
Former World Junior 200m Champion Lemaitre equalled the French 100m record when winning his National Championship in 9.98 secs earlier this season.
William Hill offer odds of 15/8 for the 20-year-old Frenchman to beat his more experienced rival to European gold.
Team GBR have three other entrants, Marlon Devonish, Mark Lewis-Francis and James Dasaolo whose best chance of a medal will be the bronze.
But they have a lot of time to make up on Lemaitre’s compatriot Martial Mbandjock who has clocked 10.08 seconds this season and Jaysuma Saidy Ndure who has run 10.09 seconds recently.
Bookmaker Bwin are offering odds for the runners to finish in a medal position offering both Mbandjock and Ndure at odds of 6/5 for a medal of any colour.
