Farah and Ennis Cut In Price For SPOTY After Barcelona Heroics
Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis have been slashed in price for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after a record breaking European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.
Farah saw his price cut from 100/1 to as low s 6/1 with Coral after he picked up gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m in Barcelona, in what the bookmaker described as the biggest British sporting achievement of the year so far.
Ennis has also seen her price shorten, going from 66/1 to just 10/1 generally after she picked up the heptathlon gold with a championship record score.
Although some bookmakers have been less hasty to shorten prices on Britain’s athletes, with Bodog offering 12/1 on Farah, the record haul of 19 medals has led some major adjustments in the market.
"Gold-medal winners have a good record in SPOTY and Farah’s efforts are arguably the best achievement by a Brit this year,” claimed Coral spokesman Gary Burton. “He must surely go close to winning."
Grand National winning jockey Tony McCoy is the current favourite, priced at a best price of 9/4 with Ladbrokes to become the first representative from the world of horse racing to win the BBC Gong.
Joining Ennis in the chasing pack is the trio of Andy Murray (10/1 with Boylesports), Lewis Hamilton (10/1 with Victor Chandler) and darts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, who is also available generally at 10/1.
