A huge clash at the bottom of the Championship on Wednesday night, as Barnsley edge closer to ‘last chance saloon’ if they want to stay in the second tier.
A game against Cardiff gives them hope, and it is fair to say, The Tykes have been a little better than their recent results suggest, can they turn that into a much needed three points?
Barnsley v Cardiff Betting Preview
It’s not pretty reading for Barnsley, they are bottom of the Championship, which is bad enough alone, but on top of that, Derby County, one place ahead of them, have been deducted 21 points this season, and are still in a better position.
They’ve lost four league games in a row, and while things are very bad, they are perhaps not quite as bad as that suggests, even more so when you consider the injuries and other absences they have had recently.
They’ve beaten Barrow in the cup, drew with West Brom before Christmas, and since then have had an extremely tough run of games, with trips to Nottingham Forest and Blackburn and a home game against Bournemouth in that run.
If they are to win, it isn’t going to be one of those games, it will be one like tonight’s contest.
Cardiff picked up a surprise win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend, but prior to that, had not won for six league games. They have to survive without the services of Kieffer Moore now too, after his move to Bournemouth.
A big positive for Barnsley is the signing of Domingos Quina. He is the playmaker they desperately need, and expected to go straight into the starting line up. Striker Carlton Morris should be back after an absence, another boost, and that finally gives Barnsley something going forward.
There are not many times when Barnsley look like they have a realistic chance of winning, but with a few things going in their favour, and the lower quality opposition heading to Oakwell, today looks to be one of them.
A Low Scoring, Narrow Victory
Cardiff are likely to play cautious here, and won’t mind going home with a point from this one, to keep them clear of the relegation zone.
On top of that, Barnsley have turned into a team playing a little more cautiously, as they try to cut out the simple defensive errors they have been making.
There is unlikely to be many goals here, so with that in mind, we like a 1-0 victory for the home side.
Set Pieces the Key for Barnsley
It will be interesting to see what Domingos Quina brings to Barnsley going forward, especially if he has Carlton Morris to link up with. However, we may not see that in full flight here, so Barnsley’s best option could be attacking from set pieces.
They are strong with balls into the box, and have a long throw specialist in Jasper Moon, alongside having corners and free kicks when they receive them.
With all of that in mind, it may be worth chancing on one of the Barnsley centre halves to get on the scoresheet from a ball delivered into the box.
Polish international Michal Helik has an eye for goal, has been unlucky a few times this season, and we like him to score anytime here for the home side.
