England v Portugal – June 2 2016, International Friendly
Many of England’s first choice team will return to the starting line-up as Hodgson has decisions to make ahead of Euros opener against Russia in less than two weeks
While this is the England players last chance to impress manager Roy Hodgson before their Europe 2016 opener against Russia in Marseille, Portugal have another game against Estonia before making their way to France.
Perhaps because of this, Portugal Manager Fernando Santos has given his two Real Madrid Champions League winners, Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, an extra game off after their final exertions.
Hodgson gave a lot of minutes on the pitch to players on the fringes of the squad against Australia, including Manchester United’s teenage sensation Marcus Rashford who broke records scoring inside three minutes in the 2-1 win.
Tottenham quartet Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Dele Alli all sat out the game, along with goalkeeper Joe Hart, so they are likely to be given time by to maintain their fitness levels and develop in the team.
One of the most famous meetings between these two was at the World Cup in 2006, when Wayne Rooney was sent off and Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in a shootout after the match finished goalless at the Quarter Final stage. That was the fourth successive draw between the two nations, two of which ended in penalty shootout glory for Portugal.
In fact Portugal have not lost against England since 1998. However, with the England fans looking to send off the Three Lions on a high and Portugal resting two of its highest profile players, it could be a good time to break that particular record.
