Former Liverpool Defender Says New Signing Is Overweight
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has taken a swipe at the Reds’ latest big-name signing, Virgil van Dijk, by claiming he ‘needs to lose a bit of weight’.
Bootle-born Carragher, who played over 700 times for Liverpool between 1996 and 2013, now works for Sky Sports as a matchday pundit and analyst, but he was speaking on The Debate show when he made these claims.
Van Dijk, a Dutch centre back, moved to Anfield in a £75million deal from Southampton at the start of the January transfer window, but Carragher has been less than impressed with his immediate impact.
“I think it will prove to be a great signing, but he hasn’t hit the ground running. I think he needs to get fit and lose a bit of weight. He actually looks too big. Maybe that’s to do with not having a pre-season,” he said.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has leapt to his new signing’s defence with this response.
Klopp on Jamie Carragher comments on VVD: "I'm sure that Jamie needs to lose a bit of weight. It's not an issue."— James Pearce (@JamesPearceEcho) February 2, 2018
The Reds are still well in the Champions League qualification race, but fans are unhappy that their attacking options have been cut by the sales and lack of replacements for Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge last month.
