Formula One: Now the War Is Over, Some Peace for Perez Fans?

The Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship is over. Max Verstappen is now officially the two-time champion. The crown was placed on his head following a confusing Japanese Grand Prix where, for most of the shortened rain-affected race, it appeared only fifty percent of the normal points tally would be awarded to drivers.

With 366 World Championship points, Verstappen cannot be caught. It is Ferrari rival Charles Leclerc – with 253 points – that is now sat in the second spot. But chasing him down is Red Bull number two, Sergio Perez.

Only one point separates the pair, and it is Leclerc that the bookmakers believe will ultimately take the silver medal. The young Monegasque driver is 4/9 in the ‘without Max Verstappen’ betting markets. Perez can be backed at 5/4.

The Hunger Games

Both are hungry. Leclerc knows he and his team squandered many points-scoring and race-winning chances during the past seven months and 18 races. Perez has won only two races. His teammate has embarrassed him by taking a dozen.

It really does look like a case of who wants it most. Given Red Bull have just the last piece of sellotape to apply to the valuable present that is the World Constructors’ Championship – for which they are 1/66 – the team will surely throw all their attention and resources at Perez to claim the 1-2 and complete a perfect season.

Leclerc and his Ferrari team are racing to save face. His teammate, Carlos Sainz, sits only fifth on the Drivers’ standings. And he seems to spend as much time getting out of a car that he has crashed as getting in one in good condition. The Spaniard has never shown wingman qualities in any case.

Perez, meanwhile, has repeatedly set races up for his teammate and has sacrificed podium finishes in the process. This has never been better demonstrated than it was in the 2021 title-deciding race in Abu Dhabi where he acted as a moving chicane to block Lewis Hamilton.

A Mexican Present?

The Mexican is owed some payback, and it is something the Red Bull team is famous for making. In 2011 Sebastian Vettel was untouchable and recorded 11 race victories. But at the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, he was unofficially ordered to move aside to allow teammate Mark Webber to take his maiden race victory.

More of the same is expected in 2022. At some stage, Perez will surely be gifted a race win. The 25 World Drivers’ Championship points that brings should be enough to give him the second spot in the standings.

The obvious place for Perez to take a race win is in Mexico. The circuit will suit his car and, from a financial viewpoint, a race win for the 32-year-old there makes enormous sense. Red Bull merchandise sales are already enormous in Perez’s home country. This is despite five previous races on home tarmac producing no more than a seventh-placed finish.

Beforehand there is the United States Grand Prix. Verstappen – who may have spent the past fortnight partying hard – is 2/5 to take this one. Perez is 9/1. That is a massive each-way price (in a market where positions 1-2 are paid at 1/3rd odds) given Perez – with anything other than help from his teammate – has claimed seven second-placed finishes in 2022.

In any case scenario, the price must be considered too big.
