Despite slipping to a heavy defeat at home to Kent on Sunday, South Group winners Somerset are favourites for the Friends Provident t20 competition after the quarter-final draw paired them with Bet365’s 16/1 outsiders Northants.
Marcus Trescothick and fellow big-hitter Kieron Pollard have been to the fore as the Sabres have run up some big scores in the group stages, though the latter will be absent for the quarter-finals.
Somerset, last year’s t20 runners-up, should still be too sharp for the Steelbacks however and are 7/2 (general) to go on and lift the trophy on finals day.
Essex (6/1 with Bet365 and Sportingbet) will play host to inconsistent Lancashire (a general 8/1) while Warwickshire edged out Nottinghamshire to finish top of the North Group by beating Leicestershire at the weekend and can be backed at 6/1 with Sportingbet.
The Bears face Hampshire (9/1 with William Hill) in the last eight, with Notts’ tie with reigning t20 champions Sussex (6/1 with Sportingbet) completing the line-up.
Nottinghamshire were able to take their foot off the pedal a while ago and coast into the knockout stages.
Though also embroiled in a tussle for the County Championship their t20 line-up, led by the experienced Chris Read, glitters with potential match-winners like all-rounder Samit Patel, veteran Ali Brown, David Hussey and Dirk Nannes.
The latter pair both played starring roles in Australia’s run to the World Twenty20 final and featured in the IPL before that. The Outlaws could be the bet at this stage at 5/1 with Totesport.
