Golf: The Players Championship Preview March 10-13

The Players Championship is one tournament we have had penned in our diaries for a while, and you can expect plenty of drama. The sight of patrons swarming around the iconic par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass is always memorable, and there will be a few golf balls getting wet at that hole over the course of the week.

Scottie Scheffler will be buoyed by his Arnold Palmer Invitational triumph last week, and he landed his second PGA Tour title in just a matter of weeks following his success at The Waste Management Open in Phoenix in February.

Deemed the unofficial fifth Major, The Players Championship will make for compelling viewing.

With that in mind, Freebets have picked out three juicy tips for you to pore over before the players tee off on Thursday.

Viktor Hovland to take the spoils

It may feel like we back Viktor Hovland every week, but he’s that good! The Norwegian is a joy to watch, and he has a wise head on those shoulders. Although he ran out of steam at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week, he may have been disappointed with his final round of two-over-par that saw him settle for a T2 finish on -4, one behind the winner Scottie Scheffler.

Nevertheless, Hovland is inching ever closer to opening his account on the PGA Tour for 2022, and this week could be his week.

You can get a tempting looking price of 16/1 with Paddy Power for Hovland to get into the winner’s circle this weekend, while Unibet has served up odds of 9/4 for the winning margin to be a single stroke, and over the years, it has been quite tight at the top of the leaderboard.

Scottie Scheffler to come racing out of the traps

Scheffler, as you may have imagined, will have enjoyed his win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He is riding a crest of the wave at the moment, and he’s now broken into the world’s top five in the men’s game for the first time in his career.

He is usually quite calm under pressure, and last week, he produced some gutsy golf to finish ahead of the chasing pack. Scheffler will be looking to get off to a quick start once again, and he’s currently at a long looking 40/1 with bet365 to be the first-round leader.

Whether he will be in contention come the weekend is another thing, but Scheffler is making all the right noises, and he could well enjoy a storming start at TPC Sawgrass.

Shane Lowry to enjoy fine week

There is usually some artistry or flourishes of brilliance whenever Shane Lowry is in the heat of competition. The Irishman has only played once on the PGA Tour in 2022, and that was at the end of last month at the Honda Classic, where he finished runner-up.

With St Paddy’s Day around the corner, Lowry would love to have something to celebrate. He could well have a decent week, and while he might not end up winning the event, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility for him to pick up a top-10 finish. Paddy Power has Lowry at 3/1 to finish in the top 10, and those odds are worth jumping on.
