Golf: WGC Dell Technologies Championship Preview March 23-27

We are waiting for Jon Rahm to explode. With the Masters and the lush scenes of Augusta around the corner to look forward, the mercurial Spaniard, who is looking to get off the mark in 2022, will be itching to get into the winner’s circle before then.

Well, the World Golf Championships (Dell Technologies) gets underway this week, and there’s plenty of prestige associated with this one. You probably ought to know that the total purse is $12,000,000 (£9 million) so whoever wins it is in for a mega payday.

64 of the world’s top players will be teeing it up in Austin, Texas, and if you haven’t watched it before, then this is a matchplay event, so think of the Ryder Cup in case you are unsure of what to expect!

Anyway, while Rahm will garner a lot of attention, Freebets isn’t taking the easy option, and we have served up three enticing tips that you just can’t turn down.

Dustin Johnson to claim the spoils

Perhaps Dustin Johnson is just warming, and he will save his brilliant best for the Masters. The American, for the large part, has been subdued in 2022, although a T9 at the Players Championship a couple of weeks ago suggests he hasn’t completely slipped under the radar.

The Austin Country Club plays at just over 7,000 yards (par 71), but Johnson won’t be deterred. We all know what Johnson is capable of, and his group doesn’t have too many concerns – he is alongside Max Homa, Matthew Wolff, and he should be confident of qualifying for the Round of 16 on Saturday.

If he can go on a birdie roll, then Johnson could well be in the winner’s circle come Sunday evening. As things stand, Paddy Power is offering Johnson – who won this event in 2017 – odds of 18/1 to clinch the title, and it could well be worth a cheeky punt.

Justin Thomas to make Final appearance

There’s nothing to suggest that we couldn’t have an all-American final come Sunday. Of course, there are still plenty of hurdles to be overcome before that. Justin Thomas is coming off the back of a third-place finish at the Valspar Championship last week, and that will put a spring in his step.

The Austin course has seen some impressive records created over the years, including the largest margin of victory, which is held by Tiger Woods, who defeated Stephen Ames 9&8 in the 1st round in 2006, and Thomas could be at the centre of some thrilling storylines over the course of the week.

Thomas is in Group 6 along with Kevin Kisner, Marc Leishman and Luke List, which will make for intriguing viewing, but he could go deep in this tournament. You can get a price of 15/2 with bet365 for Thomas to reach the Final, and this could well be worth exploring further.

Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler to make an early impression

At this point, you will need to produce your best golf, otherwise, you will be found wanting, and you won’t progress further. Scottie Scheffler returns to the scene where he lost in the final 12 months ago against Billy Horschel, while Patrick Cantlay will hopefully being feel refreshed after missing the cut at the Players Championship.

And if you like combo bets, then you can get a price of 7/1 with Unibet for Cantlay and Scheffler to win their respective groups, so it may be worth hopping on board for that one.
