Henry Cecil's Stable Jockey May Regret Investec Oaks Choice

Tom Quealey has doubts about his decision to ride Aviate in Friday's Investec Oaks, admitting that Timepiece could well turn out victorious over the Epsom course.

Tom Queally would not be surprised if his decision to side with Aviate, available at odds of 6/1 with Ladbrokes, rather than her stablemate Timepiece comes back to haunt him in Friday’s Investec Oaks. Trainer Henry Cecil has always had a soft spot for Timepiece but she has suffered defeat twice this season, including an odds-on defeat in the Lingfield Oaks Trial last time.

While Aviate has not been talked of in such glowing terms by her trainer, she is unbeaten in three runs and is preferred by stable jockey Tom Queally.

Quealy confirmed: "I did have the choice between the two and I have to say it was a tough call. I rode them both in work about a week ago and there was nothing to choose between them. In the end, I went with Aviate as she seems to do it in the afternoon too – when it counts – and has run the best trial of all the field too. I just hope she rises to the occasion once more but it was a tough choice and it would be no surprise to see Timepiece win."

Cecil is hopeful Timepiece can justify his belief in her potential and told his website:"It is difficult to split our two fillies but Aviate has done every thing right, I think she will get the trip as she settles well and has a good turn of foot."

"Timepiece has not shown the ability that I feel she has in her on her two starts this year but on her home work and ridden differently, I can see her running a big race." Betting odds of 17/2 are available with Betinternet

Epsom clerk of the course, Andrew Cooper said the going is expected to be good, good to firm in places, which shouldn’t trouble either filly.
