Injured Suarez To Miss Uruguay Opener

Luis Suarez will not be part of Uruguay's starting 11 to play Costa Rica on Saturday, but is expected to start against England

Luis Suarez will not be part of Uruguay’s starting 11 to play Costa Rica on Saturday as the striker continues his recovery from knee surgery, but is expected to return against England next week.

According to Uruguay manager manager Oscar Tabarez, the Liverpool striker’s injury will keep him out of action against Costa Rica on Saturday. However, he expects Suarez to return to face England in the second Group D clash for both on 21 June at Sao Paulo.

Suarez scored 31 league goals as Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City in the 2013/14 Premier League campaign, and is a tempting 33/1 with William Hill to be overall top scorer of the 2014 World Cup.

“We are increasing [Suarez’s] pace of recovery and up until now there have been no glitches”, Tabarez said. “We still have one day to go. We don’t want to jump the gun.

“Yesterday afternoon Suarez did the most important thing in training, which is play football. We are very happy with his recovery, but we need to be cautious.

“We have prepared not to have him, but it would be wonderful to have him. We have to be very careful.”

Diego Forlan will partner Edinson Cavani in attack for Uruguay against Costa Rica on Saturday night, while England’s Danny Welbeck is expected to be fit for the Three Lions’ opening match against Italy.

Uruguay reached the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup, and this summer are 28/1 across the bookmakers to lift the trophy. As well as these odds, Bet365 offer £200 in free bets to new customers.

Uruguay take on Costa Rica at 8pm in Fortaleza, while England take on Italy at Manaus shortly afterwards at 11pm.

The matches will be shown live on ITV and BBC One respectively, and you can compare the odds of the four Group D sides right here.
