Jurgen Klopp explains Liverpool substitution following injury fears

Liverpool played out their final Europa League group game of the season on Thursday vs Union Saint-Gilloise.

Having already secured top spot in their group before kick-off, Jurgen Klopp opted to play a very weak side, which lost 2-1 to the Belgian outfit. However, the Reds are still favourites to win the Europa League this term and can be backed at 3/1 with bet365 to do so.

Klopp speaks out on injury fear

Following the loss to Union Saint-Gilloise, Jurgen Klopp has allayed injury fears surrounding centre-back, Ibrahima Konate.

Konate was a surprise inclusion from the start as he lined up alongside Jarell Quansah, who equalised either side of goals from Mohamed Amoura and Cameron Puertas at Lotto Park.

The stopper was withdrawn at the break for Joe Gomez and Klopp moved to play down fears of another defensive injury after Joel Matip was all but ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL rupture earlier this month.

“We just wanted to share the intensity,” Klopp said. “Do I want to play Joe Gomez 90 or Ibou 90 if we had the chance to do that? [I decided] 45 and 45, the same in midfield.

“These changes were planned before the game, independent of the result. We just tried to give it a go. It was clear that Jarell if he could play through then he would play through. That was the thinking behind it.”
