England’s long awaited opening game in the 2010 World Cup kicks off tomorrow and Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are set to play together in central midfield for England again .
Fabio Capello is expected to name the duo with Aaron Lennon playing wide on the right and Joe Cole on the left in a typical 4-4-2 formation spearheaded by Wayne Rooney and either Heskey or Crouch alongside .
Many observers have often claimed that Lampard and Gerrard cannot play together and Micheal Ballack the injured German midfielder and team mate of Lampard has suggested that both players need to "pull their egos back" in order for the team to play to it’s full potential .
Certainly Lampard and Gerrard are used to controlling games for their respective clubs and both like to push forward and get into the opposition box . Ballack echoed the views of many when stating that "They can’t just play as they do for their clubs as they both want to get forward and are a little bit similar. If they pull back a little bit, they can make it work easily. "
Lampard is expected to outscore Gerrard at the tournament as he will be taking the penalties for England despite a number of recent misses for club and country . Lampard who is 5/1 with bet365 to be top England goalscorer at the tournament has scored 20 goals for England in 80 appearances whilst Gerrard 9/1 with bet365 has managed only 16 goals in 78 appearances .
All of England will be hoping tomorrow that the pair can get their combined act together and put the national interest above their ego ! .
