A flood of money early today has seen bookmakers wipe the price of England to odds on as punters begin to believe that the 2018 bid will suceed .
William Hill have cut the odds on England hosting the 2018 World Cup to 8/13 from an opening 6/5 this morning whilst offshore bookie Victor Chandler have cut England to odds of 9/10 from the 6/4 advertised in the Racing Post on Thursday morning .
William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said “‘The feelgood factor has kicked in – just as it does when the World Cup kicks off and we all convince ourselves England can win’ .
To win, England must achieve a majority of the 22 votes , voting will take place in secret at FIFA head office and the winning bid is placed into a sealed envelope by a neutral observer and taken to the Messezentrum in Zurich to be announced to the waiting world soon after 3pm.
England bid ambassador David Beckham has been superb in leading the bid and Beckham has said that he trusts the FIFA executive to make the decision purely on the merits of the bid and nothing else . Speaking last night , Beckham tried to use his passion and experience to sway Fifa’s executive members, saying it would be a “dream” to stage the event ” and that “I owe my life and everything I have to football.”
Prince William has also being promoting the bid even though he knows very little about football and commented that “Football is part of the fabric of our nation” and that England offer “truly a World Cup for the world”.
Not to be outdone Prime Minister David Cameron has been flying in and out of Switzerland all week and in an effort to appeal to the money men at FIFA has guaranteed that a successful English bid would “guarantee commercial success “
On a very positive note FIFA president Sepp Blatter has thanked the presentation team and described the English bid as “excellent and remarkable” .
