Manchester City v Tottenham Match Preview
If you are a devout fan of the Premier League, then you know how this story starts. Manchester City have the odd slip in autumn but then start to get their act together during the festive break and from there, they leave all their title rivals in the dust.
A three-act play that has taken place countless times over the past few years and if the past few weeks are anything to go by, it looks as if Pep Guardiola and his players have just started this season’s opening act.
Not only is it back-to-back defeats in the Premier League but there is also reverses to Sporting in the Champions League and Tottenham in the Carabao Cup to add to the equation and it is the latter who play the role of opponent on Saturday.
Spurs may have come out on top in the League Cup recently, but it is their own deficiencies in the league that currently generates the biggest talking point in the white half of North Lonon and the discussion largely involves the status of manager Ange Postecoglou.
A status that one week looks secure and the next looks rather shaky and each time Tottenham have an international break to move into, do they then fall to a disappointing defeat which then goes on to ask some difficult questions regarding the former Celtic boss.
Not only did Postecoglou’s men throw away a two-goal lead at The Amex to end the game empty handed before the October break, but they then lost 2-1 at home to Ipswich before the November hiatus got underway.
Each time Spurs have an opportunity to change the narrative of the campaign and position themselves in the top four, do they then throw away that opportunity and as a consequence of the most recent defeat, they start this weekend sitting 10th in the table.
They say the table does not lie, but there has to be an element of fib surrounding Spurs’ current standing. When they are hot, they have the ability to blow teams away with ease. When they are not, a house of cards comes crashing down around them.
Their last six league games have seen victory followed by defeat and if the pattern was to continue this weekend, it would see them get the better of Manchester City. At the same time, the hosts have to return to winning ways at some point and that point could mean all three at the weekend.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because City are currently swimming in unchartered waters, the news that Guardiola is set to sign a new contract will steady the shipwreck. A home win and over 4.5 goals can be built at odds of 13/5 with Coral.
In addition to this, Erling Haaland has been a little too quiet for City recently but with him fully back in the scoring groove during the international break he could easily damage Spurs’ defence. Damage that comes with a treble of goals (or more) at odds of 12/1 with Betfred.
