Manchester United dealt hammer blow ahead of Galatasaray

Manchester United return to Champions League action on Tuesday evening against Galatasaray, looking to bounce back from defeat in their group opener.

Despite Man United’s poor form at the start of the 2023/24 season - their latest defeat coming against Crystal Palace on Saturday - they are 4/9 favourites with bet365 to pick up the win at Old Trafford.

Late last week it was confirmed by United that Lisandro Martinez would be out of action for an ‘extended period’ due to the aggravation of a foot problem he suffered in a Europa League tie against Sevilla.

It has now been determined that he will have further surgery in a bid to cure the problem once and for all and is expected to be out for up to three months, ruling the centre-back out of the remainder of Manchester United’s Champions League group games.

The Red Devils lost to Bayern Munich last time out but the rest of their group, on paper, is much easier. After hosting Galatasary on Tuesday, United welcome Copenhagen to Old Trafford on October 24 before a trip to Denmark for the reverse fixture on November 8.

All three of United’s upcoming Champions League matches are winnable, hence why they remain second favourites to qualify from Group A alongside Bayern Munich with odds of 1/3 with bet365.

However, United can still be backed at 9/4 to miss out on Champions League qualification.

Hojlund praise

With Manchester United’s defence on the ropes currently, their forwards will need to step up if they are to progress into the latter stages of the Champions League.

Rasmus Hojlund scored his first United goal in their opening group game vs Bayern Munich and received high praise from Peter Schmeichel for his display vs Crystal Palace on Saturday, telling the Premier League’s Goal Rush: “I would say he was involved in 90% of what was good about the Manchester United side.

“The problem is that the team hasn’t had a real number nine for a very long time, so it will take time for them to get used to it. He makes the right purchases, he remains patient, but he is not served properly.”
