Manchester United reach unwanted 61-year milestone after Galatasaray stalemate

Manchester United’s Champions League qualification and potentially even Europa League football hopes came crashing down on Wednesday.

Man United drew 3-3 with Galatasaray after going 3-1 up thanks to some big mistakes from Andre Onana. United are now 4th in Group A and will likely remain there as their final group match is against Bayern Munich. The Reds Devils will be looking to bounce back in the league this weekend and are 13/5 to beat Newcastle.

Manchester United’s unwanted record

After the game, it was revealed that Manchester United have conceded 33 goals in all competitions this season, the most in their opening 20 matches of any season since 1962/63 (43).

Giving his assessment of the game, Erik ten Hag was quick to defend the mistake-prone Andre Onana: “Andre is okay,” Ten Hag said. “As I said, it is not about individuals. Of course, individual errors in football can make a difference and you take responsibility for it but it is always about the team.

“This team is good, all the players in the squad are good and deserve the best to play for Manchester United because they are brilliant players. And that counts for the whole squad.

“I think as a team we played very well. We win and lose together. You see the progress in this team. I take many positives from this game. Some mistakes [but] we played like I want my team to play. It was enjoyable to watch that proactive, dynamic, brave and we scored great goals.

“Even after we had some setbacks, we kept going until the end and we should have won with big chances from Scott McTominay and (Facundo) Pellistri. Of course, I am disappointed because we should have managed the game better, we will learn from that. Because this team is in development.”
