Newcastle return to Champions League action on Wednesday evening for what is one of the biggest games in the club’s storied history.
The Magpies welcome French champions PSG to St James’ Park on October 4 as they look to pick up their first Champions League win of the season following a 0-0 draw with AC Milan at the San Siro last time out.
Mbappe struggles
With Lionel Messi and Neymar gone, Kylian Mbappe is now the main man for PSG. However, transfer speculation over the summer caused a rift between the 24-year-old and the club.
Mbappe was banned from training with the first-team and missed the opening of the 2023/24 season. He was also recently benched for the 4-0 win over Marseille.
Luca Demange of Culture PSG provided an insight in Mbappe’s state of mind ahead of facing Newcastle: “Without Messi and Neymar, Mbappé is this team’s assertive attacking leader. He has been precious for the moment, scoring eight times, but has also looked a little out of sorts of late, having to give up his place against Marseille in the Classique.”
Whilst Mbappe may not be at his best on Wednesday, Eddie Howe and co. will be hoping their star men can step up to the plate, in particular, Alexander Isak.
The Swede was signed for big money by the new owners for nights exactly like this and after already scoring five this season, he is expected to test PSG’s resolve at St James’ Park.
