Newcastle & Manchester United make unwanted history in Champions League

Newcastle faced off with AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, aware they needed to win to keep their European hopes alive.

However, Milan came away with a 2-1 win and Newcastle are now out of both the Champions League and Europa League.

The Magpies will be looking to bounce back in the Premier League this weekend when they take on Fulham and are 4/5 to pick up the three points with bet365.

Newcastle & Manchester United’s unwanted record

On Newcastle’s Champions League exit, Eddie Howe said: “The value of the squad first and foremost, that’s what’s exposed us, the fact we haven’t had the ability to utilise the squad we’ve created. We’ve gone into games very limited in what we can do and that hasn’t helped us.”

When asked if he could use the exit to fuel the rest of the season and the domestic campaign - with three other competitions to aim for - Howe said: “You always have to use disappointment - the setbacks - as motivation and fuel for your fire to make sure you continue to achieve.

“We’ll go back to the Premier League and try and do as much as we can to be consistent and stay up there.”

After Newcastle lost to Milan, Newcastle and Manchester United both finished bottom of their Champions League groups in 2023/24, just one time fewer than in all other seasons combined for English clubs (Blackburn in 1995/96, Man Utd in 2005/06 and Man City in 2012/13).
