Odds drop on Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked after historic Middlesbrough defeat

Chelsea succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening in the first of two League Cup semi-final legs.

The loss continues a rather worrying run of poor results and performances for the west Londoners and has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s odds drop to 14/1 with Betfair to be the next Premier League manager sacked.

Chelsea set unwanted record

After Hayden Hackney’s 37th-minute effort secured Boro a massive win, it has been revealed that Chelsea’s defeat to Middlesbrough is the first time they have lost a League Cup match against a side from a lower division since October 1999, which was against Huddersfield.

Furthermore, among Premier League sides, only Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest (32 each) have lost more games than Chelsea (31) in all competitions since the start of last season, while no side has lost more away from home than the Blues (21).

Following the first 90 minutes at the Riverside, Pochettino was asked to give his assessment of the game and said: “It’s so easy to explain. We made some mistakes in the first half and we were punished for that. We created big chances and did not score. We were not clinical enough. So clear.

“Other games you can maybe talk in a different way but now it is so easy to explain. Second half we dominated but did not create enough chances.

“Credit to Middlesbrough. It’s the first 90 minutes, first half of the tie and we are losing 1-0. In 15 days we are going to have the second tie and we need to be positive we can win the game and go to the final.”
