Old Tweet From Former Premier League Goalkeeper Proves Correct About David De Gea
A tweet from former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent in 2011 defending David De Gea has resurfaced, and it is fair to say the Polish stopper was right to stand by the Manchester United man.
De Gea has become almost universally seen as the world’s best goalkeeper, having put in years of consistent performances at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to the club nearly seven years ago from Atletico Madrid.
In the early weeks and months of his Premier League career, the Spaniard, then 18, was heavily criticised for high-profile mistakes and generally not being strong enough, but Ferguson stood by him, believing De Gea was destined for stardom.
Szczesny, now at Juventus having also played for Roma, was quick to protect De Gea, and having learnt a thing or two himself about playing between the sticks at the highest level, it is not a surprise that all this time later, it has been proven that he was speaking sense.
I don't agree with De Gea criticism. He's potentially one of the best GK in the world but needs time to get his confidence at ManUtd!— Wojciech Szczesny (@13Szczesny13) December 7, 2011
Real Madrid are constantly credited with an interest in signing De Gea, almost doing so in 2015, but United are keen to tie him to a new contract.
