Jockey Nina Carberry may have retired from the saddle in April 2018 with 412 career winners under her belt, but there may be one more big winner in the 37-year-old Cheltenham Festival winning rider yet.
One of a dozen contestants in Ireland’s Dancing With The Stars – the Irish equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing – the veteran of six Grand Nationals is the current bookies favourite for the RTE broadcast television show that began on January 9th.
With one hopeful celebrity eliminated every week, the show is scheduled to run for three months. But Carberry has impressed judges and punters alike and they are not concerned about what could go wrong during that sizeable timescale. 6/1 at the outset, she was into 2/1 with Paddy Power as we moved into February.
Rival contenders include Irish R&B singer-songwriter Erica Cody who is next in the betting at odds of 5/2. Irish Paralympic swimmer Ellen Keane is currently trading at 4/1. with Irish bookmakers Paddy Power.
Other contestants still in the running include former Tour de France and Giro d’Italia rider Nicholas Roche. The 37-year old former teammate of Chris Froome is one of the outsiders who can be backed at odds 0f 33/1.

Bookies Simply Love Strictly
Unsurprisingly betting firms with a strong presence in Ireland – such as Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Boylesports – are all betting on Dancing With The Stars. But others simply cannot wait for September when the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing is back on the BBC’s screens.
As a stopgap, William Hill has introduced a market on who will take part in the 20th series of the show. Last year 15 individual celebrities took to the dance floor and the bookmaker has come up with a shortlist of 40 potential candidates that they believe could take part in the 2022 show.
The Beeb Loves Strictly Too
25 of those listed are priced under 5/1. They include comedian Alan Carr, footballers Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch. But the William Hill odds compilers have not missed the connection with the show and existing BBC employees.
Last year the bulk of Strictly contestants had a connection to the broadcaster much to the annoyance of the tabloid press. Consequently, BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt, Nina Warhurst and Sally Nugent, BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker and George Rainsford, an actor in the BBC’s Call The Midwife are amongst the early favourites to take part in the 2022 show.
