Oosthuizen Wins Open Golf Championship By Seven Shots
250/1 Shot Louis Oosthuizen completed an easy victory at St Andrews this afternoon and rewarded shrewd backers who knew what good form the South African had been in this season .
Oosthuizen had seven top twenty finishes this season prior to this week including a victory in the Andalucian Open . Bookmakers Bet365 , Paddy Power and William Hill all offered 250/1 pre tournament . A William Hill spokesman was candid enough to admit on Friday as Oosthuizen surged into a five shot halfway lead that they had only taken 20 bets out of 25 000 on the man known as Shrek to his friends because of the gap between his front teeth .
No serious challenge was mounted to the leader in a final day that lacked any real excitement . Leading british hope Paul Casey blundered his way to a 75 including a triple bogey seven at the 12th .
Lee Westwood played steady golf to finish second , one place better than 2009 and maintain the consistent form that has seen him rise to world number 3 this year .
For Ulsterman Rory McIlroy it is very much a case of what might have been . a first round 63 was followed by a disastrous 80 in the second round . amazingly McIlroy recovered to finish in a tie for third with Casey and Swede Henrik Stenson .
Paddy Power make Westwood and McIlroy 18/1 to land a first major in the USPGA which gets underway on the 12th August .
