The Manchester Utd midfielder Nani will play no part in the 2010 World Cup after suffering an injury to his left arm in training on Friday . Nani had been in great from for Manchester Utd this season and was expected to be one of the stars of this year’s World Cup .
Nani’s injury is an opportunity for Benfica midfielder Ruben Amorim who will join the squad today .
Portugal’s opening game is against Ivory Coast on Tuesday June 15th and they will now have to rely even more heavily on Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo .
Ronaldo has scored 22 times in 71 appearances for Portugal but despite having a prolific season with Real Madrid he is currently enduring a goal drought for his country .
If Portugal are to progress from Group G which is one of the toughest groups they will need goals from, their forwards and the pressure will be on Ronaldo as well as Simao who also plays in Madrid but for Athletico and Liedson from Sporting Lisbon . Both Simao and Liedson are aged over 30 but Simao in particular has a good goal scoring record for Portugal notching 21 in 80 appearances .
The loss of Nani is a significant one for Portugal and they have been pushed out to 33/1 with Totesport to win the World Cup outright .
However qualification into the last 16 might be the best Portugal can expect in 2010 and Victor Chandler make them 8/13 to do so .
