It is quite remarkable that Harry Kane has scored just five Premier League goals this season.
The England captain, such a prolific and lethal finisher for club and country, has simply not enjoyed the same scoring rate this term.
Or at least he hasn’t in the Premier League.
In 35 appearances for Spurs and England, he has netted 19 goals.
A fine record and a ratio of more than one goal per game.
Yet in the Premier League his touch has eluded him, certainly in the opening weeks of the season.
Kane took two months to score a league goal, finally notching in the 3-2 win at Newcastle United on October 17.
That sluggish start – perhaps a legacy of his failure to secure a summer switch to defending champions Manchester City – has left him playing catch up ever since in the race for the coveted Golden Boot.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is way out in front in this season’s Premier League goalscoring charts, having found the net 16 times.
Thus it comes as no surprise to see the Egypt star is the 2/7 favourite with bet365 to finish top.
The odds on Kane finishing top of the pile?
He is as far out as 40/1 with Betfred but he would need to go on some run to land the coveted Golden Boot for a fourth time.
He achieved the award in 2015-16 (25 goals), 2016-17 (29 goals) and against last season (23 goals) but this time it feels a bridge too far.
Salah, though, has some competition closer to home in the shape of Liverpool team-mate, Diogo Jota.
Jota is in second place in the scoring charts with 10 Premier League goals so far this term and has certainly proved his worth to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The former Wolves star is becoming increasingly popular with Liverpool supporters and you can get 16/1 with SBK on him to win the Golden Boot.
Stopping Salah from winning the prize will take some doing – but if anyone can, perhaps it is Jota?
Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, with eight Premier League goals so far this term, is a tempting 22/1 with SBK.
But he has much ground to make up in the remainder of the campaign.
SBK are also offering a whopping 49/1 for Jamie Vardy to win the Golden Boot he claimed in 2019-20, when the Leicester City frontman bagged 23 Premier League goals.
Vardy is currently on nine Premier League goals for the season – just one behind Jota and seven behind Salah.
