Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe Could See Clash Of Derby Winners
After Workforce’s impressive 7 length victory in the Investec Derby on Saturday, the French equivalent ( Prix Du Jockey Club ) produced an equally authoritative performance by the Andre Fabre trained Lope De Vega.
Winner of the Poule D’Essai Des Poulins under a confident ride from Maxime Guyon, the colt was handed a poor draw in stall 20, but the talented rider managed to obtain a prominent position and after going clear early in the straight the result was never in doubt.
Dietrich von Boetticher, owner of the Shamardal colt, admitted that connections were uncertain about the horse getting the 1m 2 1/2f trip, as he is from the family of miler Machiavellian.
Fabre, surprisingly, announced the 1m Jacques le Marois as the colt’s next possible outing, at Deauville in August.
Although Lope De Vega would have to travel another 1 1/2f farther than the French Derby trip, if going for the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, it is bound to be a tempting proposition for connections, and an opportunity for both Derby winners to put their reputations on the line.
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Workforce’s owner Khalid Abdullah, nominated the Irish Derby as the colt’s next port of call if recovering well from his Derby exertions, although a trip to Ascot for the King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a possible alternative.
Workforce is a 4/1 shot for the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe with Lope De Vega a top price 10/1 with Victor Chandler and William Hill.
