Friday evening’s feature race at Newcastle is the Betfred Gosforth Park Cup and the Class 2, 5 furlong handicap looks to be at the mercy of the Michael Dods-trained Desert Ace, with online bookmakers opening up at 4/1 at the overnight stage.
The 4-year-old looked in need of the run when well down the field on his seasonal reappearance at Beverley, but was back on song when runner-up to the thriving Red Baron at Thirsk last month. The winner that day has gone on to beat Confessional, Lexi’s Hero, Arctic Feeling and Addictive Dream at Musselburgh, so it’s fair to expect Desert Ace to put it up to that quartet off the same mark.
Asphan Sam could be the fly in the ointment having made all in a 13-runner Epsom handicap three weeks ago, though a 7lb rise in the weights for that win will make the follow-up far from straightforward.
Northgate Lad should give his running off an unchanged mark following yet another solid effort in defeat when fourth of 16 in a valuable handicap at York, while Another Wise Kid has placed twice in three starts this term and Pearl Acclaim could struggle now upped 6lb for edging a 16-runner event at Musselburgh.
