Mount Logan is lightly weighted for the Napoleons Casinos And Restaurants Handicap and can land 4.25 Doncaster at the expense of Mighty Yar and Bold Sniper on Saturday afternoon.
The dust will barely have settled after the St Leger when this 1m 4f Class 2 event gets underway, for which the mount of Andrea Atzeni is a top price of 4/1 best odds guaranteed with William Hill. Luca Cumani’s progressive 3-year-old has come on leaps and bounds since running well for fourth on his debut as a juvenile over 7f at Newbury last July, which was followed up with success over a 1 mile trip at Yarmouth in September.
The New Approach colt was perhaps asked to do too much, too soon when finding Newmarket’s Group 3 Autumn Stakes too hot in his final race as a 2-year-old, a race won by St Leger favourite and Derby runner-up Kingston Hill. Mount Logan was soon back in the winners enclosure though, after a step up to 1m 2f showed his liking for a longer trip in a class 3 at Goodwood when returning from a break in June. The Sheikh Mohammed-owned horse has twice gone close in class 2 contests since that triumph, most recently over 1m 4f at Haydock when again relishing a test of stamina which will put him in good stead tomorrow.
There are two main dangers to watch out for in Mighty Yar and Bold Sniper. The pair drop back in trip after proving ineffective over a longer distance in the Betfred Ebor, with the former perhaps the bigger threat having been just edged out two starts back. But Mount Logan has less to carry and is still open to further improvement, so is tipped to come out on top.
