Racing Tip: Pineau De Re Eyecatcher In Summer Plate

Will Smith is heading to Market Rasen for the Summer Plate on Saturday and shares his strategy to beat the boomakers

Pineau De Re is the big Saturday tip after catching the eye of Will Smith for the Summer Plate at Market Rasen

After last weekend’s glut of top quality flat racing, the undoubted highlight of this weekend is the Summer Plate meeting at Market Rasen.

The luring Lincolnshire venue hosts their showpiece day of the year, and aided by the liberal dousing of sunshine it should be a cracking day.

The feature itself looks to be at the mercy of Dr Richard Newland, as he throws three potent arrows at the race. Bobowen and the thriving Paddy The Hare will go well, but it is his Irish recruit Pineau De Re that catches the eye.

His last run in Ireland for Philip Fenton was breathtaking as he ran away with the Ulster National. Upped 14lbs in the handicap on his debut for the doctor, over a trip half a mile further than he faces here, he travelled sweetly on the front end for a long way before his tendency to jump slightly right and the distance took it’s toll.

Back right-handed, dropped 2lbs, with the benefit of that run and the ever-excellent Richard Johnson booked, the 9/1 with Paddy Power looks generous.

The appetiser for the Plate is the Summer Hurdle, a valuable and prestigious event in its own right. It is a mystery how last year’s winner Local Hero is 11/1, as he has won very good two races over course and distance. He simply loves the venue, the ground, and the sun on his back. He is aptly named.

The suggestion is to back both, and combine them in an each-way double, as I simply can’t see either of them out of the frame.

The last race on the card features a horse which has been on my radar ever since it joined the upwardly mobile stable of Ali Brewer.

Once a winner of a valuable race at Sandown when with Nicky Henderson off a hurdles mark of 128, Skint now finds himself making his handicap chase debut for Ali Brewer off a lowly 117.

On all three of his recent runs he has shaped as if the larger obstacles and the drop in trip are going to get him back to winning ways.

As yet, bet365 is the only bookmaker to price up the race but at 8/1 he is a must bet.
