Former President Donald Trump will go on trial over his handling of classified documents sometime later this year. Current President, Joe Biden, is making an ever-increasing number of gaffs suggesting his 80 years have overtaken him. Nevertheless, it is this duo that heads the betting in the race to become the next US President.

In April President Biden announced he is running for re-election in 2024. If successful, Biden will be 86 at the end of his second term in office. Will voters like that prospect considering he is already proving dithery? You would think not, but Betfred is alone in offering an industry top price of 13/8 about him winning the next vote on November 5th, 2024.

Trump, with 37 federal charges to face (31 under the Espionage Act), might well be in jail during November 2024. While charges against a former president and leading contender for a major party’s presidential nomination are unprecedented, there is nothing in the US Constitution that prevents someone who has been charged or convicted from seeking or taking office.

His potential sentence is anything up to ten years in jail. Although that scenario is unlikely to happen, his election odds have recently and understandably lengthened. He is now 11/4 (BetVictor) to get his President’s job back.

Remarkably, Trump is only 4/7 to get the nomination to become the Republican Party’s candidate. Ron DeSantis – who announced he was running for the top job in May during a disastrous Twitter Spaces event – is second best, at 11/4, to secure the candidacy from the Republican Party.

DeSantis looks strong as a recent NBC News survey stated 70% of Americans do not think Biden should run for President again. 69% of those surveyed cite his age as the reason for their belief.

Trump is less than four years younger than Joe Biden. It means he would become the oldest person to be elected President if regaining office in the November 2024 election. It also means the Republicans know their better chance is with the younger man. DeSantis is only 44.

Biden’s Popularity Cannot be Denied

Ill health or jail time could stop either Trump or Biden during the coming 16 months but, unless that happens to Biden, everything suggests he will be at the starting stalls in November 2024.

Recent polls show he is the clear favourite among Democrats (and punters at odds of 1/4) for the 2024 nomination. No one else comes close. Vice-President Kamala Harris is a distant second, some twenty points behind. She is therefore 20/1 to get the nomination and 40/1 to win the Presidential election.

And so everything hinges on Trump. Yes, he can run a campaign and be elected as President from a jail cell, but will he get that far down the road?

With the support of Elon Musk – lasting more than a year, the U.S. presidential campaign and the nominating process is one of the longest and most expensive in the world – DeSantis will not be financially outgunned by Trump and with the Republican Party’s membership acutely aware of the ‘age factor’ they could turn off their former Guru.
