The eyes of the racing world and beyond will be on Ascot’s Champions Day and the likely final appearance of the great Frankel who will face five rivals in the 1m 2f Champion Stakes including regular pacemaker Bullet Train.
Sir Henry Cecil’s superstar is sure to go off at prohibitive odds in an effort to keep his unbeaten record intact with win number 14, but with most bookmakers offering odds on Frankel’s winning distance, in an effort to drum up business, there is still value to be had in the outcome of the Group 1 contest.
With the ground at Ascot sure to be the most testing that Frankel has so far encountered it is understandable that there is an element of concern as to whether Galileo’s best son will be able to show his true ability under such conditions.
There is no doubt that chief rival Cirrus Des Aigles, and to a lesser extent Nathaniel, will relish plenty of give underfoot but a strong case can be put forward for Frankel spreadeagling the opposition once again.
Connections will be hoping for a career-high performance in an effort to secure an official rating to surpass that of the 141 given to Dancing Brave in 1986, and if this is to be Frankel’s swan song a hard race will not leave a lasting mark on the best horse in the world.
By far and away the best value on offer comes from bookmaker Coral who offer Frankel at odds of 11-2 to win between 8 and 11 lengths inclusive, and a big looking 12-1 about 12 lengths or over.
Providing Cirrus Des Aigles was to finish second, any of those winning margins would almost certainly elevate Frankel as the highest rated horse of the modern era and cap a career bordering on equine perfection.
