Freebets.com Sandown tip Lyn Valley has been backed from 14/1 last night to as low as 8/1 with William Hill to win the £75,000 Coral Challenge at 2.40 today.
Racing pundit Alan Kelly advised the Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old who goes up against older horses in the one mile handicap on the Esher course. Lyn Valley was recommended at the stand out price of 14/1 with William Hill last night but the UK bookie cut the odds of David Probert’s mount to 8/1 on the morning of the race.
Form figures for Johnston’s charge don’t look too inspiring on first looks but punters have found the confidence to support the son Shamardal against proven rivals like Gabrial’s Kaka the mount of Frankoe Dettori, Russian Realm (ridden by Ryan Moore) and St Moritz who all have useful winning form.
At the bottom end of the handicap, however, Lyn Valley enters with a mark of 94 which could prove generous on closer inspection of the colt’s performances. He ran with a great deal of credit at Epsom on Derby day when squeezed for room inside the final furlong. Jockey Adam Kirby would have finished much higher up the placings than fifth with a clearer run.
Franke Detorri was on board for Lyn Valley’s most recent start when again, the colt ran better than his finishing position suggests. Dettorri brought him with a challenge two furlongs out but once it was clear he couldn’t catch the leaders, the jockey eased his mount inside the final furlong.
Another horse supported in the betting is Luca Cumani’s Velox. The son of Zaminder won a maiden at Leicester last June and looked to be producing the best performance of his seven-race career until hampered at Epsom last time. Velox has supported from 13/2 with sponsor’s Coral and is a general 5/1 favourite at the time of writing.
