WTA 1000 Indian Wells: Iga Swiatek
What a start to the Sunshine Double! Iga Swiatek made it 11 wins on the trot as she eased past Maria Sakkari to claim the Indian Wells title – becoming the first Polish woman to claim the title, and now ties former finalist Agnieszka Radwanska as the highest ranked Polish player in history – moving up to World No. 2 with the win.
She is the first woman to hit 20 match wins this season as she clocks a career best straight run of 11 matches on the trot – winning two WTA 1000 events back-to-back. And let’s not forget, she is rather handy on clay – one to watch? We think so!
Rather a handy week for the Greek too – she rises to No. 3 in the world, and there were some stand-out performances from both Simona Halep and Paula Badosa – ones to watch in Miami over the next couple of weeks.
ATP 1000 Indian Wells: Taylor Fritz
Well now – this had all the drama. From Taylor Fritz pulling up in agony at the start of his warm up, to Rafael Nadal leaving the court clutching his pecs, two injured players still managed to put together a solid final.
Frtitz came out with all guns blazing, jumping out to a 4-0 lead from the thus far unbeaten Nadal. By the time the Spaniard actually found his rhythm the first set was over. But after leaving the court between sets for treatment Nadal made the second set a tighter affair, but his winning streak came to an end as Fritz ended the drought for an American winner of the Indian Wells title.
Not surprisingly Nadal is skipping Miami and going to have some much needed rest – which spells nothing but danger when we get to the European dirt! But by that point we will have Novak Djokovic back in the mix!
Despite not being able to enter the USA for the Indian Wells and Miami double, Djokovic will return to the top of the ATP rankings and will remain there for the next two weeks as we are about to do this whole two-week extravaganza all over again! He is next expected to play in the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo.
