The Open 2010: Bookmakers React To Westwood’s Injury
Bookmakers are offering free bets and special offers for 150th Anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews from 15 July – 18 July.
Gibraltar based bookmaker Stan James pushed out the odds of Lee Westwood after it was revealed his calf injury will not be fully healed in time for this week’s Open at St Andrews.
Despite reminding journalists: “The old saying is ‘Beware the injured golfer’, so hopefully that will ring true.” Stan James now offer 22/1 for Westwood to lift the Claret Jug having been 16/1 earlier this week.
Westwood explained: "I’ve got swelling into my ankle and it is six to eight weeks recovery time if you put your feet up,"
"But with the biggest tournament on the calendar this week I can’t afford to do that, so it’s a case of strapping it up and playing as well as I can."
Westwood remains the leading English fancy for the open and will tee off with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and Australia’s Adam Scott at 13:42 BST on Thursday.
Westwood is vying with Justin Rose for favouritism in the Top English Player betting market and Stan James offer odds of 10/3 for Westwood to come out on top.
"I’ve been looking forward to this week for quite some time. It’s the home of golf and it’s even more special when the Open Championship is here – and obviously it’s one I’d like to win," he said of the Scottish course.
The world number three has been carrying an Achilles injury for the last eight months and it is not adversely affecting his game, he confirmed: “Obviously it doesn’t help but I’m hitting the ball well and feel like I’m very comfortable on these greens. I’m still hoping for a good week.”
