The Pennies Have Been Pouring in On Mordaunt

Penny Mordaunt next Prime Minister odds

The Conservative Party leadership nomination process is now closed, and the most recent betting odds have been released.

The Minister of State for Trade Policy Penny Mordaunt is the new favourite to become the next Prime Minister after attracting an avalanche of money during the week. 12/1 in April and 6/1 in June, Mordaunt is now into odds on at 4/6 to take the helm at the party and, in turn, lead the country.

Who are the remaining contenders for next PM?

Candidates had to demonstrate they had the backing of 20 other MPs in order to advance this far. The result was announced by Sir Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee of Conservative MPs, shortly after the deadline passed.

The leadership race is now down to just six candidates after Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi were knocked out of the race on Wednesday. In hot pursuit of Mordaunt are Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. This duo are 7/2 and 4/1 respectively with the best online bookmakers.

Of the other contenders, Kemi Badenoch can be backed at 20/1 – top-priced at William Hill – Tom Tugendhat is 50s and Suella Braverman is the rag at 250/1.

Former Chancellor and Health Secretary Sajid Javid withdrew from the race before the results were announced leaving these six contenders in the race to succeed Boris Johnson as the leader of the Conservative Party and the position of our next prime minister.
