The Power Of The Dog is Sure to Prove Popular at the Oscars

Oscars Betting Odds Preview & Tips

The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards – better known as the Oscars – were announced on February 8. The official ceremony takes place on March 27th in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The Power of The Dog, filmed in New Zealand, received the greatest number of nominations. The Netflix movie has the potential to collect an Oscar in 12 categories.

Despite not having a nomination in Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor or Best Supporting Actress categories, the epic science fiction movie, Dune, is up for 10 Oscars.

Third on the list is the blank and white Belfast and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Both have seven Academy Award nominations.

Best Picture Odds

  • The Power Of The Dog – 1/2 bet365*
  • Belfast – 7/2 Coral

  • Licorice Pizza – 25/1 bet365*
  • King Richard – 33/1 BetVictor

  • Nightmare Alley – 100/1 bet365*

Invest in King Richard

The Best Picture Academy Award is the ultimate accolade in filmmaking. Whereas 22 of the 23 categories feature five nominations, ten films get recognition in the Best Picture Oscar section.

However, according to the bookies, it is only a three-runner race: The Power of The Dog is 4/9, Belfast is 2/1 and West Side Story is 9/1. It is 16/1 bar. King Richard (33/1 BetVictor) is interesting amongst these ‘also rans’ and, if you could back each-way, it would be an appealing prospect.

The film – that follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of famed tennis players Venus and Serena Williams – stars Will Smith and he is 1/3 (BetVictor) to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.

In 2018’s three of the four acting winners depicted real-life characters. On that occasion, Rami Malek – playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury – took the prize. The Academy voters love an autobiography as much as the general population loves the Williams sisters and Tiger Woods.

The subject matter alone should garner a lot of votes in all categories.

Smith has twice been nominated for the Best Actor award – 2002 for his role in Ali, and 2007 for his part in The Pursuit of Happiness. 2022 looks to be his year and he is a confident Oscar banker bet.

Best Actor Odds

  • Will Smith – 1/3 BetVictor
  • Benedict Cumberbatch – 7/2 bet365*
  • Andrew Garfield – 10/1 Coral
  • Denzel Washington – 40/1 bet365*
  • Javier Bardem – 50/1 bet365*

Campion Champion

But the night will surely belong to The Power of The Dog. Its director, Jane Campion, is top-priced 1/8 to win the Best Director accolade. The New Zealander wrote, directed and produced the film and is now the first woman to receive multiple Best Director nominations.

Experts are predicting the film could win up to five Oscars during the ceremony – staged at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. However, it cannot take the prize for Best Actress as it does not have a nomination.

In fact, for the first year since 2006, no nominee in the Best Actress category stars in a movie nominated for the Best Picture award. Collectively, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Stewart, Olivia Colman, Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz all earned their nomination for acting in a film that is not amongst the ten films worthy of a Best Movie nomination.

Best Actress – Stewart Backed to Be Queen

Theoretically, this should make the Best Actress award betting odds market the most open of all. Currently, Nicole Kidman is the favourite at 13/8 (top-priced at Betfair). The Australian stars in Being the Ricardos – a biographical drama film that examines the relationship between I Love Lucy stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Olivia Colman, 9/2 at bet365* has been steady in the Oscars betting lately. The English actress previously won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Anne in 2018’s The Favourite. This time her movie is the Netflix streamed The Lost Daughter. It was produced on a shoestring $5m budget.

However, the market mover has been Kristen Stewart (11/2 bet365*). The 31-year-old American who plays Diana, Princess of Wales, in Spencer was 7/1 at the start of February. She is now as short as 4/1 but can still be backed at 11/2 with a few companies – including bet365*.

Unquestionably Stewart put forward a great performance in Spencer and the English Royal family is a very hot topic in America. It is also a regular winner at the Oscars.

Best Actress Odds

  • Nicole Kidman – 13/8 Betfair
  • Jessica Chastain – 7/4 Coral
  • Olivia Colman – 5/1 Coral
  • Kristen Stewart – 11/2 bet365*
  • Penelope Cruz – 20/1 bet365*

Flee to Strike a Chord With Voters

Of course, these are troubling times, and we have no idea where the world will be at the end of March. Right now, the eyes are on Ukraine and its humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands have already fled the country. Refugees will soon be spread across Europe.

This may add votes to the animated docudrama Flee (7/4 Betfair). It follows the story of a man named Amin Nawabi, who shares his hidden past of fleeing his war-torn country as a child for the first time.

The 90-minute documentary had already received much acclaim from film festivals and critics, with critical praise for animation, story, thematic content, subject matter and LGBT representation. In total, the film has already collected 35 individual awards.

It faces stiff opposition from Summer of Soul (…or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) which is a drifting 8/15 favourite. But Flee is the better bet and Betfair odds of 7/4 may soon be under pressure.

  • Best Movie: The Power of The Dog – 1/2 (bet365*)
  • Best Actor: Will Smith – 1/3 (BetVictor)
  • Best Actress: Kristen Stewart – 11/2 (bet365*)
  • Best Documentary: Flee – 7/4 (Betfair)
