Here we take a look at the five most successful clubs in the illustrious history of the F.A Cup:
5. Chelsea – 7
Chelsea have been the most successful club in the competition since the turn of the 21st century, winning the competition five times since the year 2000. The Blues were the first team to lift the trophy at the new Wembley in 2007 by beating Manchester United 1-0 a.e.t. Chelsea have gone on to win the F.A Cup three more times, last winning the competition in 2012.
4. Liverpool – 7
A list like this wouldn’t be complete if Liverpool wasn’t on it. With 60 trophies to their name, Liverpool rank second only to their great rivals Manchester United in terms of their overall trophy haul. Their last success in 2006 is a final remembered for the brilliance of their captain Steven Gerrard. Two brilliant strikes, including a stoppage time equaliser, helped Liverpool fight back from 2-0 and then 3-2 down to eventually win the tie on penalties.
3. Tottenham Hotspur – 8
Tottenham have been among the most successful clubs in F.A Cup history for some time, but Spurs fans have waited a long time since they last saw their side lift the trophy. Tottenham Hotspur was last engraved in the F.A Cup in 1991. On that day, Spurs’ 2-1 win was overshadowed by Paul Gascoigne’s knee injury that kept him out of the game for over a year. Spurs’ enjoyed a bulk of their F.A Cup success in the 1960’s when they won the competition three times between 1960 and 1967.
2. Arsenal – 11
Arsenal’s nine year trophy drought was started an finished with victories in the F.A Cup and their victory last season took them level with Manchester United as the competitions most successful team. Aaron Ramsey’s extra time winner clinched an 11th title last season for Arsenal who won a dramatic final 3-2 a.e.t. Hull had opened up a 2-0 lead after 8 minutes, but goals from Cazorla, Koscielny and Ramsey clinched a first F.A Cup for the Gunners since Patrick Vieira’s last kick for the club won the Cup in 2005.
1. Manchester United – 11
Its no surprise to see the name Manchester United here. The Red Devils are the most successful club in English with a total of 62 trophies, just beating Liverpool to that crown after recently passing the Merseyside clubs haul of 60. What is surprising, however, is how long ago they last won the competition. The 2003/04 season was the last time they lifted the famous trophy in a game where Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a brace and Cristiano Ronaldo was still that kid with the silly highlights in his hair.
