Swiss maestro Roger Federer has won the tournament five times and could meet long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals should results go the right way. Spaniard Nadal won the US Open in 2010 but has battled with knee injury since pulling out of the next Grand Slam event in Australia. He returned from a long absence to win the French Open in June and will be bidding to win his thirteenth career Grand Slam title.
Serena Williams is coming off the back of her victory against Victoria Azarenka in the Womens singles in Cincinnati and the US Open top seed will be keen to make amends for her disappointment at Wimbledon where she was defeated by Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round.
Belarussian Azarenka is seeded to meet Williams in the final at Flushing Meadows and with Maria Sharapova out with a shoulder injury, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska is seeded third and Italy’s Sara Errani fourth.
