West Ham United travelled to Germany on Thursday for their second Europa League outing of the season.
The Hammers beat Backa Topola 3-1 in their opening group game and after securing a 2-1 win this week, they now sit top of Group A with six points, five points clear of 3rd place.
West Ham are among the favourites to win the competition in 2023/24 and can be backed at 20/1 to do so with bet365.
History-making Hammers
West Ham took an early lead in Freiburg through Lucas Paqueta after just eight minutes. The home side hit back minutes into the second half but a 66th-minute header from Nayef Aguerd secured David Moyes and co. the three points and saw the east London club cement their place in the history books.
After seeing off Freiburg, it has been revealed that West Ham are the first English side ever to go 17 European matches (including qualifiers) unbeaten, with all 17 games coming since the start of last season.
Granted, a lot of those games came in the Europa Conference League against some lesser sides, but it is an impressive record nonetheless and one David Moyes is very proud of:
“I got told about the record yesterday and I was quite thrilled to even be level with the two managers who were in question, Don Revie and Bill Nicholson, and I have to say I was delighted with getting the win,” Moyes said post-match.
“The record is always really good to get, but more important was winning tonight, and getting those three points is so good, particularly when many would consider this the hardest game in the group.”
