Zawraq is set to overlook the Tattersall’s Irish 2000 Guineas next weekend, in favour of running in next month’s Investec Derby.
The Dermot Weld-trained has climbed up to second favourite for the Derby, even though he has not run since last month – after a number of inconclusive performances from some of the other potential Epsom candidates have seenthe three-year-old profit in the betting markets.
Just like Zawraq, racing fans can profit in the Tattersall’s Irish 2000 Guineas betting markets with Paddy Power – as the Irish bookmakers give new customers up to £30 free bets when they stake £10 or more on their first bet.
Unbeaten in two starts – including last month’s Listed Leopardstown 2000 Guineas trial – Zawraq’s preparations for the race recently received a setback, when he missed a piece of work.
When questioned about whether Zawraq’s next run was likely to be the derby Shiekh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold told the Racing Post: “At this stage it would be more likely. I’ve got to confirm it with Sheikh Hamdan and no final decision has been made, but that’s the way it’s looking.
“At this stage Dermot is planning to take Zawraq for a racecourse gallop and with him being second favourite for the Derby we have to be thinking of going that way.
“He missed a bit of work and Dermot has been happy with him this week, but I don’t think he feels he’ll have him at his best for next weekend and would be better for the Derby in a few weeks.”
Paddy Power are currently the only bookmaker offering ante-post odds for the Tattersall’s Irish 2000 Guineas and – with Best Odds Guaranteed available as well – they currently price Gleneagles (1/3), Ivawood (4/1) and Belardo (10/1) as the favourites to win the 3.25 Curragh next Saturday.
