What happened in the first fight?

Via a lopsided unanimous decision with the scorecards reading 117–112, 116–112 and 115–113, Usyk comfortably controlled the original contest, with Joshua left bamboozled as to what tactics to implement in order to break the guard of the unbeaten Ukrainian.

Usyk set the pace throughout the 36 minutes of combat, showing footwork and movement of a man half his size, whilst simultaneously earning the champion’s respect with his spiteful power.

Feints, body movement, head movement and an accurate backhand to the torso flowed majestically from the fists of the away fighter. Usyk proved a puzzle to which Joshua had to solve in the dark.

His conditioning was spot on. There are numerous opportunities to compare Usyk to a throwback fighter, but on that Saturday night last September, his apparent ability to pace himself 15 rounds – if ever required – was clear for all to see.

Every punch landed, every attack slipped and every minute that ticked by, Usyk was able to further suck the life out of the pro-Joshua crowd. Pockets of Ukrainians grew louder, prouder inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as the penny dropped amongst the paying public: Oleksandr Usyk is a special fighter.

As the final few rounds approached, Joshua showed heart and bravery in order to hear the final bell. The away fighter – about to win his seventh world title fight in the back garden of his opponent – pushed for the stoppage, underlining his dominance with a flurry of unanswered punches, at a volume that Joshua hasn’t experienced as a professional. Joshua stuck out his tongue in a final act of resistance, but the ink had dried on his second stint as champion.

Usyk handed Joshua the second loss of his professional career and marched on to 19-0, joining an illustrious club of fighters to become both cruiserweight and heavyweight world champions.

Usyk v Joshua Betting Odds & Tips

Oleksandr Usyk (19-0, 13KO)

Oleksandr Usyk is an unbeaten two-weight world champion and a former Olympic gold medalist.

Now 35 years old, the Ukrainian has been a professional since 2013, winning 13 of his 19 fights by stoppage.

Technically schooled over the years by James Ali Bashir and Anatoly Lomachenko, Usyk is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted fighters in the sport and is atop a lot of pound-for-pound discussions.

His best wins have all come in the “back-yards” of dangerous fighters, fighting (and beating) Marco Huck in Germany; Mairis Briedis in Latvia; Murat Gassiev in Russia; and Tony Bellew and Anthony Joshua in the United Kingdom.

His August 20 rematch with Anthony Joshua will be his fourth outing in the heavyweight division since jumping up from cruiserweight in 2019.

Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22KO)

Former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is one of the biggest names in British boxing.

The Olympic super-heavyweight champion from 2012 burst onto the professional scene following a stellar home Games in London and rode to 22-0 before being handed his first loss in dramatic style to Andy Ruiz Jr. in New York.

“AJ” regained his titles in a December 2019 rematch, but lost them once again to Oleksandr Usyk in their first fight in 2021.

Joshua is known for his concussive power and ability to finish a fighter when they are in trouble. His uppercut is fast becoming his signature shot, following devastating wins against Vladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin.

Joshua has recently split with his long-term trainer Robert McCracken and will now be guided in the corner by Robert Garcia for the rematch.
